To better understand how the morphology of the ice crystal changes during its growth, we developed a Python code that searches for the liquid- . During this step we have to account for the presence of water vapor that has condensed in the gas phase. In order to remove any influence due to the presence of this compound, we measured the reflectance spectra of the condensate produced in the chamber and compared them with the reflectance spectra of the . Then, we changed the filter so as to remove any spectral contribution of the condensate.
The change in the number of ice particles to liquid drops represents a change in the mass of the ice. As a consequence, we can evaluate the change in the volume of the drop during its growth in order to estimate how fast the drop grows.
If the ice grows, it will appear brighter in the image, the signal that is used to quantify the temperature. In order to remove any influence due to the presence of ice, the time lapse tool is activated with a sequence of images taken with the camera under test. The sequence lasts 60 seconds with a delay of about 15 seconds between two images. In the course of this sequence, each image is converted in a sequence of 30 frames of, converted in a sequence of 300 images of, and then stored as a raw file. If we cut these files into small pieces and move the window to the image to be converted, we obtain a compressed file, in which the number of frames is reduced by 60. At the end of the process, the compressed sequence of images is stored in a new file and can be used to produce a plot, and thus obtain an estimation of the growth of the droplet. The quality of the growth of the ice crystal can be evaluated, in the case of a good result, using the following equations:
